NEU elections – Treasurer/Membership & Equalities Officer and National Disciplinary /National Appeals Committee

As you may know, the elections for NEU Treasurer and Membership & Equality Officer and the NDC/NAC have now opened. All eligible members (all bar student and retired members) have been sent voting papers for return by midday on 11 July. We have set up an election hotline – 020 7380 4825 – which will operate until 5 July which will be the last possible date to send out duplicate papers.
A text message will be sent to all members in the election cohort on Sunday at 2pm encouraging members to vote in the elections and to call the hotline if they don’t receive a voting paper. The text message will have an ‘opt out’ facility and all members who have previously advised us that they wish to opt out of such messages will not receive the text.

Open Statement to Members of the Newham NUT Section of the National Education Union [NEU]

As you will see the outcome of the NTA 2017 Local Elections means that I have not been re-elected as your Divisional Secretary & Secretary Newham Teachers Panel. Thus, my current office in both posts ceases as of 6th February 2018. I apologise to members that I have not continued to demonstrate the confidence you have previously have shown in me in re-electing me to these posts annually since 1992. It has been a great privilege for me to represent you over those years. My personal material circumstances will change significantly, and I have no choice but to resign the delegate positions [NUT London Regional Council and Delegate to NUT Annual Conference] to which you have re-elected me as I shall now be unable to carry out those responsibilities to effectively represent you.

Thus, my personal involvement in the affairs of the Association will cease as of 6th February 2018. I wish to emphasise that in making this statement I do so with no personal regrets and with the continuing respect for the membership I have had the honour to represent over the past 25 years. I wish the new leadership you have chosen to elect all the best for the future and hope they are able to live up to your expectations as I hope I have previously done.

Vote For Education Campaign: 4

4 - Learning
NUT says:
Most students like school and teachers want to teach. But unnecessary and high-stakes testing and exams get in the way of education. The curriculum has narrowed. The arts, technical and vocational education find it harder to keep their place. Primary and secondary schools are teaching to the test. Problems of stress and mental health are rising – for students and teachers. There are better alternatives. Powerful voices are calling for a new approach, that learns from other countries, and addresses the future not the past.
What you can do:
Ask your candidates to support More than a Score, a coalition of parents, teachers and educators that campaigns against SATs and for a different primary assessment system.
Ask them to support a change in secondary schools so creative subjects are valued equally to others.
