Coach to Manchester to lobby Conservative Party Conference Sunday 1st October

Message received:

Dear All
As last year we are sponsoring the East London coach to lobby the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester on Sunday 1st October. The NHS remains high on the political agenda and there will be a good national turnout by NHS campaigns. (I hope the route is better than last year!!)

I shall bring the banner and we have new tabards you can buy if you want to look corporate!!. The coach will pick up from Mile End at 6.15am, Stratford Station at 6.30pm and Ilford Hill at 6.45am. It will return and make 3 similar stops at about 10pm. A long day but is usually fun

Costs are £25 waged, £15 unwaged and a donation for anyone who needs help with the costs. There are union funds to top up these costs.

With regards

Newham SoNHS []

Meeting 11/10/2017: London NUT Women’s Network

Our Bodies, Our Choice: the Abortion Act 50 Years On
by London NUT Women’s Network supported by the TUC and Abortion Rights

Date and Time
Wed, October 11, 2017
18h30 to 20h30

NUT, Hamilton House

It is 50 years since the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act which gave most women in the UK access to safe abortions. We are meeting to celebrate the passing of this Act but also to build the campaign to improve women’s rights to abortion.
Women in Northern Ireland are still not covered by the Act and many women across the UK are still obstructed by poor access and cuts to reproductive rights services. It is also the case that abortion is only available on the authorisation of two doctors and, without this, it is still a criminal act.
We know that worldwide millions of women do not have access to safe abortion and thousands of women die.
Globally, the rights we have won are under threat. Come and hear from experts and campaigners about what we’ve won and what is still to fight for.
This meeting will be a rallying call to act.
Confirmed speakers:
Caitlin de Jode, London Irish Abortion Rights Campaign,
Kerry Abel, Abortion Rights
Dr Marilyn Thomson, specialist on abortion rights in Latin America
Diana Johnson MP
Supported by Trades Union Congress, Abortion Rights, Marie Stopes UK
There will also be stalls from Humanists UK, Abortion Support Network and Bookmarks

School Funding – Latest News

Newham Teachers’ Association has just provided the NEU (NUT Section) with the latest figures showing the cuts to funding which our local schools are facing.

Date change: London Pay Demonstration now 17/10/2017

Important news:

The date for the London pay demonstration and rally has been MOVED FROM THURSDAY 12 OCTOBER to TUESDAY 17 OCTOBER.

The reason for the date change is that, at the same time as we have been planning our demonstration, the TUC nationally had also been developing plans for a national Lobby of Parliament around the same issues for the following week.

The organisers of the London Pay Demonstration have agreed that, rather than try and build two events in successive weeks, we should join forces with the TUC to send a powerful and united message to the government to scrap the pay cap and that we deserve a pay rise.

With unions working together regionally and nationally to build the day, this can be a significant event that can help add to the pressure that is clearly now building on the Government.

Further details and a new leaflet will be sent out as soon as possible but we hope it will be a similar route and start-time, allowing school staff and others to attend the rally after work and to be joined by those who have also travelled to London to attend the TUC Lobby that is being held during the day on Tuesday 17 October.

Care 4 Calais Report

Hi all.

Care4Calais is operating at full tilt at the moment and also gearing up for winter, when conditions will be especially harsh. So three things:

Trip to Calais
We have volunteers going over to Calais on October 22nd and probably staying for the week. If you would like to come, please email me to arrange (or just to get further details). It’s likely we’ll have at least two cars going, so plenty of space.

Vans & Drivers
Care4Calais often needs drivers to take over larger donations. If you have a van, trailer or big car and would be prepared to do an occasional delivery run, please let me know and I’ll pass on your details. They would then contact you direct if a job comes up. No obligation, but it’s good to have as many potential vans as possible on the books.

Attached is the latest C4C wanted list. In October we can carry things over. Please stick to the list, however, as they don’t want things which can’t be used. Biggest priority of all at the moment is men’s waterproof coats. And of course money, which is used primarily for buying food and fuel for the vans, which are still going regularly to Dunkirk, Brussels and Paris as well as the Calais area. If you can donate anything, please let me know and we’ll collect.

Thanks, as always, for your support.

24/10/2017 – Join us and lobby your MP to oppose school cuts

Message from NEU:

Dear colleague

The National Education Union set Justine Greening five tests in advance of her funding announcement yesterday. She failed every one of them.

Join the lobby of Parliament on Tuesday 24 October organised by the National Education Union, parent groups and other unions. Register for the lobby here. Show MPs you oppose the Government’s funding policy. Tell your colleagues and encourage parents and others to attend.

● School cuts have not been reversed.
● There is no real new money for education.
● Cuts to high needs, early years and post-16 are not being reversed
● There is no long term funding commitment
● Historic underfunding will not be addressed

The Government promised ‘fairer funding’ but has instead been cutting schools’ funding in real terms, leading to larger class sizes, curriculum cuts, fewer teachers and support staff, resources and materials. All of this is set to continue.

The School Cuts website will be updated soon so that parents, teachers and education professionals can see the full impact of these proposals on every school.

Education must be fairly funded and the only way to do that is to provide more money. Support the National Education Union’s campaign with parents and help us make the Government see sense.

Yours sincerely

Kevin Courtney
Joint General Secretary
