Coram Voice

Dear everyone at the Newham Teachers Association,

I am writing on behalf of Coram Voice, which is part of the UK’s oldest children’s charity Coram. Coram Voice provides advocacy to children in care and care-leavers and we are constantly finding new ways to amplify the voices of these young people.

One of the exciting ways we are doing this is with Voices 2018, a writing competition open to primary and secondary school aged children in care and young care-leavers, which is open until February 8. With the competition in its third year, we are looking forward to it being the best year yet, with this year’s theme being ‘Who or What Makes You Proud’. Entries (to be submitted online at www.coramvoice.org.uk/voices18) can be anything from poems, short stories, raps and song lyrics, with a 500 word limit, and there are four categories to enter: primary school, lower secondary (11-14), upper secondary (15-18) and care leavers. As many migrant and refugee children are looked after by local authorities, we hope you will share our enthusiasm for Voices. We always try and have as diverse a range of entrants as possible, and factors such as English being an additional language are always taken into consideration and can be mentioned in their application.

We wondered whether you might kindly be able to help us promote the competition to the young people you work with. For example, please let us know if it may be of interest to feature the competition in your newsletter, website or blog? We are more than happy to provide copy if you can please let us know of any deadlines, word count or specific requirements. I’ve attached a copy of our electronic A4 competition poster to share.

We’d also greatly appreciate any help you can give us to get the word out on social media using @CoramVoice and #Voices2018. Please let us know if you would like us to send you some suggested tweets and posts to share, or you can retweet our messages @CoramVoice.

The competition is a great opportunity to celebrate the talent of care-experienced young people and show the world what they can achieve. Any help you can give us in encouraging young people to enter would be hugely appreciated, and if you have any other ideas then please do let us know.

If you have any questions or want to know more then please don’t hesitate to contact me at sasha.khan@coram.org.uk or visit www.coramvoice.org.uk/voices18 for details on how to enter, Ts&Cs and prizes.

Thank you for your time, and we look forward to hearing from you!

Kind regards,

Sasha
