The NTA “Refugees Are Welcome Here” schools competition prize-giving was hosted by Essex Primary School. Eight of the winners and their families were able to attend to receive their certificates and book tokens presented by John Newman of Newham Bookshop. All schools who entered received thank you certificates and some children also received Highly Commended certificates. Each school who did not have winners was given a book for their school library.
Our President, Peg Probett, would like to thank everyone who took part. The quality and sensitivity demonstrated in the poems and posters was very moving. Perhaps our politicians could learn more humanity from our young people!
The 2017 competition is over but…..
Many teachers have found the lesson plans suggested for this competition were excellent. The documents have therefore been left on this website as a resource. We hope you find them useful.

Christine Blower presented the prizes.
The NTA thanks Christine for her support and encouragement of the event.
Thanks also to all the schools which participated and ensured the success of the competition.
Prize winning entries:
The NUT runs the competition across the country so Newham’s children have the chance to achieve national recognition. We expect that in 2016 Newham schools will again receive national success.
The NUT was so impressed with the work of Newham’s schools that it sponsored the national publication of an anthology of their children’s poetry:
Newham Refugee Poetry Book 2015/16
A Resources List with lesson ideas can be downloaded from our website.
